You want to combine Zanzibar’s beautiful white sandy beaches with exciting and unique wildlife on the mainland? Then a Safari Trip is definitely the right thing for you to do!
We decided to go on a two day safari in the Selous Game Reserve. After a 30 minutes flight from Zanzibar airport we arrived directly in the game reserve. The friendly rangers welcomed us and prepared a small and delicious breakfast so that we were starched for the upcoming tour with our big safari jeep.
Making our way through dusty tracks we were amazed by the beauty of this game reserve. Birds tweeted, crickets’ chirped and there were no other people except for us. After a few minutes we already spotted the first animals: two huge giraffes were passing our way – an unbelievable feeling!
A herd of Zebras was crossing our route, followed by a group of monkeys playing around on the trees. As we were passing one of the water holes we saw Hippos swimming around, shaking their ears and diving in the muddy hole.
Time was passing by and we were surprised that it was already time for lunch. Starched from lunch we continued our game drive. We were really lucky and excited when we met a group of big elephants on our way.
Last but not least we also spotted a group of lions relaxing lazy under a tree – what a great feeling to see those majestic animals so close to our jeep!
Happy and exhausted from that great experience our ranger brought us to our accommodation close to the reserve: a small camp with beautiful bungalows and a nice pool to relax. In the night the sky was full of stars and we were surrounded by the magical noises of the bush. On the next day we woke up early to start a boat tour on the Rufiji River. We spotted a lot of different and very colorful birds and a dangerous looking crocodile enjoying the sun. Our highlight were the huge groups of hippos which were observing us on our tour.
Afterwards we went to an interesting bush walk with a local bushman. He explained a lot about local and healing plants, trees and the animals and told us exciting stories about his ancestors who were Bushmen as well!
Then it was time to say goodbye: we departed from the reserve to fly back to Zanzibar with a small plane! We enjoyed a beautiful last view on the reserve and till today we are really happy and still excited about that great and memorable trip!
Our resume: It is definitely a trip which is worth it! So don´t miss the chance to discover the unbelievable great range of animals in Tanzania and experience such an unforgettable adventure!
